Kalpa is a small village located in the Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh. According to historical evidence, this region was under the history of the famous Maurya Empire. Later it was ruled by the Mughal Empire. A fusion of Hindu and Buddhist religious cultures can be seen here. Kalpa is an attractive hill station, which attracts everyone with its beauty. Kalpa, situated at an altitude of about 2758 meters above sea level, was earlier the headquarters of the Kinnaur region. However, it was later replaced by the city of Rekong Peo. Travellers coming here can see the beautiful Sutlej river flowing down the great Himalayas and passing through the rocky surface of Kinnaur.


History of Kalpa

According to historical evidence, the Kalpa region was under the rule of the Maurya Empire after the Magadha dynasty in the 6th century. Also in the 9th and 12th centuries, Kinnaur was ruled by the Gugu Kingdom of Tibet. Later the Mughal emperor Akbar acquired this region and included it in his empire.



Places to visit in Kalpa

Kinnaur Kailash Parvat, locally known as Kinnar Kailash Parvat, is one of the main attractions of Kalpa. It is considered sacred by the local people of the region. A Shivalingam, which is 70 meters high, is on its summit, which attracts a large number of devotees and tourists throughout the year. Another major attraction here is the Sangla Valley, situated on the banks of the Baspa River, which is situated at an altitude of 8,900 feet above sea level.

Travellers who are interested in architecture can visit Kamru Fort, Naga Temple, and Sapni, which are famous for their architectural excellence. Tourists can also visit the Chinese Village, which is known for its rich heritage and tradition. Situated at an altitude of 2290 meters above sea level, the town of Rekong Peo offers a panoramic view of Kinnaur Kailash Mountain. The 'Suicide Point' is another prime location, just 10 minutes away from the apple orchard.

The natives of Kalpa earn their living by selling beautifully woven shawls and kinnauri caps. Best time to visit Kalpa

The best time to visit Kalpa is during the summer season when the temperature is moderate. The minimum temperature recorded here during summer is eight degrees Celsius. This place receives unpredictable rainfall during monsoon. Hence travellers are advised to take measures to avoid the rain while visiting Kalpa during this time. Travellers are not advised to visit this place during winters, as the minimum temperature drops below -10°C during that time.

Air - The nearest airport to Kalpa is 'Shimla' for passengers who wish to travel by air. It is situated at a distance of 276 km from the village of Kalpa and is well connected with major cities like New Delhi, Mumbai and Kullu. Taxis and cabs are readily available from Shimla airport to Kalpa for travellers.


By Rail - The nearest railway station to Kalpa is 'Shimla Railway Station, which is about 244 km. is far. It is a major railway station, which is connected to important Indian cities. Taxis and buses are easily available from the railway station to Kalpa.


By Road - Travelers can also reach Kalpa by road via National Highway 22, which separates from Powari to Kalpa. Travellers can take both state-owned and private buses to Kalpa from the nearby cities of Shimla and Rampur. Apart from this, tourists can also avail of buses from Rohtang Pass, which opens only during the summer season.
