Milam Glacier Trek – A Journey to the Heart of the Kumaon Himalayas

The Milam Glacier Trek is more than just a Himalayan adventure—it’s a walk through living history, remote wilderness, and an undisturbed cultural landscape that still resonates with stories of ancient trade routes, lost villages, and spiritual mystique. Nestled deep in the Johar Valley of Uttarakhand’s Pithoragarh district, Milam Glacier is the source of the Gori Ganga River and one of the largest glaciers in the Indian Himalayas, stretching nearly 16 kilometers in length and 3 kilometers in width.

If you’re an avid trekker craving something off the beaten path, this moderately challenging trek offers a rare opportunity to explore an untouched corner of the Himalayas far removed from the commercialized trails of Himachal and Nepal.

Why Choose the Milam Glacier Trek?

Most trekking routes in India either offer you scenic mountain views or cultural interactions, but the Milam Glacier Trek gives you both. It’s not just the views of Nanda Devi, Hardeol, or Trishul that will leave you awestruck, but the serene charm of ancient villages like Martoli and Milam, once thriving trade outposts on the Indo-Tibetan route.

The trek traverses pine forests, river valleys, alpine meadows, glacial moraines, and high-altitude deserts. Along the way, you interact with the Shauka people, an indigenous tribe of traders who lived harmoniously with the terrain and practiced trans-Himalayan trade for centuries.

Best Time to Do the Trek

The Milam Glacier Trek is open for a very short window each year:

  • Summer Season: May to mid-June – ideal temperatures and blooming rhododendrons.

  • Post-Monsoon Season: Late September to early October – clear skies and snow-dusted peaks.

Avoid monsoon months (July-August) due to landslides, and winters (November-April) when the region is completely snowbound and inaccessible.

Getting There: Your Journey Begins in Munsiyari

The base for the trek is Munsiyari, a scenic hill town perched at 2,200 meters, often dubbed the “Little Kashmir” of Uttarakhand. Reaching Munsiyari is an adventure in itself. Here’s how to get there:

  • By Rail: Nearest railway station is Kathgodam, around 300 km away. Regular trains connect it to Delhi and other parts of India.

  • By Road: From Kathgodam, take a taxi or bus to Munsiyari via Almora, Bageshwar, and Tejam. It’s an 8–10 hour drive.

  • By Air: The nearest airport is Pantnagar, about 315 km from Munsiyari.
