The Panch Kedar temples in Uttarakhand are believed to have been built by the Pandavas to seek forgiveness from Lord Shiva. Completing the Panch Kedar Yatra is said to grant moksha and spiritual purification.

Detailed Panch Kedar Yatra Itinerary (12 Days / 11 Nights)

 

Day 1: Rishikesh / Haridwar → Sonprayag (Drive)

Your spiritual and scenic journey begins from the holy town of Rishikesh or Haridwar, driving towards the serene Himalayan village of Sonprayag, the gateway to the sacred shrine of Kedarnath Temple.

 

🚗 Drive Details:

Distance: Approx. 210–230 km from Rishikesh

Duration: 8–10 hours (depending on traffic & road conditions)

Route: Rishikesh/Haridwar → Devprayag → Srinagar → Rudraprayag → Guptkashi → Sonprayag

 

🌄 Enroute Highlights:

Witness the divine confluence at Devprayag, where the rivers Alaknanda and Bhagirathi meet to form the holy Ganga.

Scenic river views along the Alaknanda and Mandakini valleys.

Pass through the pilgrim town of Rudraprayag, known for its spiritual significance.

Enjoy breathtaking Himalayan landscapes as you ascend toward Sonprayag.

 

🏔️ Arrival at Sonprayag:

Upon arrival, check into your guesthouse/hotel. Sonprayag is located at an altitude of approximately 1,829 meters and serves as the main halt before Kedarnath. Vehicles are parked here, and further travel to Gaurikund (starting point of Kedarnath trek) is done via local transport.

Day 2: Sonprayag → Gaurikund → Kedarnath

 

Begin your day early with spiritual enthusiasm as you proceed toward the sacred shrine of Kedarnath, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva.

 

🚕 Sonprayag to Gaurikund (Drive – 5 km)

Distance: Approx. 5 km

Duration: 20–30 minutes

Mode: Local jeep/shared taxi (private vehicles are not allowed)

Gaurikund is the official starting point of the Kedarnath trek. This holy place is associated with Goddess Parvati and is home to the sacred Gauri Temple and hot water kund.

 

🥾 Gaurikund to Kedarnath (Trek – 16–18 km)

Distance: Approx. 16–18 km

Duration: 6–8 hours (depending on pace)

Altitude of Kedarnath: 3,583 meters (11,755 ft)

The trek route is well-paved and scenic, passing through Rambara, Jungle Chatti, Bheembali, and Linchauli. Pilgrims can opt for ponies, palkis, or helicopter services (from Phata/Guptkashi/Sersi) as alternatives to trekking.

Upon reaching Kedarnath, check into your guesthouse or camp accommodation. After some rest, visit the sacred Kedarnath Temple for evening darshan and attend the divine aarti ceremony.

Day 3: Kedarnath → Gaurikund → Ukhimath

 

After early morning darshan at Kedarnath Temple, begin your descent toward Gaurikund and later drive to the peaceful town of Ukhimath.

Spend some quiet moments near the temple, surrounded by the majestic Kedarnath range.

Have breakfast and prepare for the trek down.

 

🥾 Kedarnath to Gaurikund (Trek – 16–18 km)

Distance: Approx. 16–18 km

Duration: 5–7 hours (descending is comparatively easier)

Route: Linchauli → Bheembali → Jungle Chatti → Rambara → Gaurikund

Pony and palki services are available for those who prefer assistance during descent.

 

🚗 Gaurikund to Ukhimath (Drive – Approx. 50 km)

Duration: 2–3 hours

Route: Gaurikund → Sonprayag → Guptkashi → Ukhimath

Ukhimath is a significant winter seat of Lord Kedarnath. During winter months, the idol from Kedarnath Temple is worshipped at Omkareshwar Temple.

Check into your hotel/guesthouse upon arrival. Ukhimath offers panoramic views of snow-clad Himalayan peaks including Chaukhamba and Kedarnath ranges.

Day 4: Ukhimath → Ransi → Bantoli via Gaundhar

 

Today marks the beginning of your scenic trek toward the sacred Madhyamaheshwar valley. The trail offers dense forests, charming Himalayan villages, and breathtaking river views.

 

🚗 Ukhimath to Ransi (Drive – Approx. 20 km)

Duration: 1–1.5 hours

Ransi is the road head and starting point of the Madhyamaheshwar trek.

Vehicles are parked here before beginning the trek.

 

🥾 Ransi to Bantoli (Trek – Approx. 10–12 km)

Duration: 5–6 hours

Route: Ransi → Gaundhar → Bantoli

Altitude at Bantoli: Approx. 2,600 meters

 

The trek begins with a gradual descent towards the Madhyamaheshwar Ganga valley, followed by a steady ascent. You will cross picturesque wooden bridges and walk through lush oak and rhododendron forests.

 

📍 Gaundhar Village
A beautiful mid-way halt surrounded by terraced fields and traditional stone houses — perfect for a short rest and refreshments.

📍 Bantoli

Bantoli is situated at the confluence of the Madhyamaheshwar Ganga and Markanga rivers. It is a peaceful campsite with basic lodges and tent accommodations.

 

The soothing sound of the river and the serene Himalayan environment make it an ideal overnight halt.

Day 5: Bantoli → Madhyamaheshwar

 

Today is one of the most spiritually uplifting and scenic days of the journey as you trek toward the sacred Madhyamaheshwar Temple, one of the revered Panch Kedar shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva.

 

🥾 Bantoli to Madhyamaheshwar (Trek – Approx. 9–10 km)

Distance: 9–10 km

Duration: 5–7 hours

Altitude: 3,289 meters (10,790 ft)

Trail Type: Moderate to steep ascent

 

The trail from Bantoli begins with a gradual climb and becomes steeper as you approach the temple. You will pass through dense forests of oak and rhododendron, alpine meadows, and small shepherd settlements.

The panoramic views of Chaukhamba, Kedarnath, and Neelkanth peaks gradually unfold as you gain altitude, offering spectacular Himalayan scenery throughout the trek.

 

🛕 Arrival at Madhyamaheshwar

On reaching Madhyamaheshwar Temple, check into the guesthouse or basic lodge near the shrine. The temple is believed to be the place where the navel (Madhya) of Lord Shiva appeared in the form of a Jyotirlinga after the Mahabharata war.

 

Spend time exploring the peaceful temple surroundings and attend the evening aarti for a deeply spiritual experience.

 

🌄 Optional Short Hike: Budha Madhyamaheshwar

If time and weather permit, you can take a short 1–2 km hike to Budha Madhyamaheshwar, a meadow offering one of the most breathtaking sunset views over the Chaukhamba massif.

Day 6: Madhyamaheshwar Temple → Ransi → Chopta

 

After a peaceful morning at Madhyamaheshwar, begin your descent back to Ransi and later drive to the scenic meadow town of Chopta, often referred to as the “Mini Switzerland of India.”

Enjoy sunrise views over the Chaukhamba massif from the temple premises.

🥾 Madhyamaheshwar to Ransi (Trek – Approx. 18–20 km)

Distance: 18–20 km

Duration: 7–9 hours

Trail: Steep descent via Bantoli and Gaundhar

 

The downhill trek passes through dense forests, wooden bridges, and charming Himalayan villages. Though descending is easier than climbing, the long distance requires good stamina and careful footing.

Upon reaching Ransi, meet your vehicle for the onward journey.

 

🚗 Ransi to Chopta (Drive – Approx. 45–50 km)

Duration: 2–3 hours

Route: Ransi → Ukhimath → Duggalbitta → Chopta

Chopta is a serene hill station surrounded by lush meadows and dense forests, offering spectacular views of snow-capped Himalayan peaks.

 

Chopta also serves as the base for the famous trek to Tungnath Temple and Chandrashila.

Day 7: Chopta → Tungnath → Sagar (Gateway of Rudranath)

 

Today combines spiritual exploration with breathtaking Himalayan trekking as you visit Tungnath Temple and later proceed toward Sagar Village, the starting point of the sacred Rudranath trek.

Distance: 3.5 km (one way)

Duration: 2–3 hours

Altitude of Tungnath: 3,680 meters

The stone-paved trail gradually ascends through alpine meadows with panoramic views of the Chaukhamba, Nanda Devi, and Kedarnath peaks. Tungnath Temple is the highest Shiva temple in the world and one of the revered Panch Kedar shrines.

Spend time at the temple, seek blessings, and soak in the majestic Himalayan surroundings.

 

🌄 Optional Hike: Chandrashila Summit (1.5 km further)

From Tungnath, adventure seekers can continue 1.5 km to Chandrashila Peak (approx. 4,000 meters). The summit offers a 360° view of prominent Himalayan peaks including Trishul, Nanda Devi, Chaukhamba, and Bandarpoonch.

 

🚗 Chopta to Sagar Village (Drive – Approx. 70–80 km)

Duration: 3–4 hours

Route: Chopta → Gopeshwar → Sagar

Sagar Village, located near Gopeshwar, is the main base camp and gateway for the Rudranath trek.

Day 8: Sagar → Lyuti Bugyal

Today begins the challenging yet incredibly scenic trek toward the sacred Rudranath region. The trail from Sagar to Lyuti Bugyal takes you through dense forests, steep ascents, and vast alpine meadows.

Distance: 12 km

Duration: 8-10 hours

Altitude at Lyuti Bugyal: Approx. 3,300–3,500 meters

Trail Type: Steep and continuous ascent

The trek starts with a sharp climb through thick oak and rhododendron forests. As you gain altitude, the forest gradually opens up to expansive alpine meadows (bugyals).

Panar Bugyal: One of the most scenic high-altitude meadows in the region, offering panoramic views of Nanda Devi, Trishul, and Dronagiri peaks.

🏕️ Arrival at Lyuti Bugyal

Lyuti Bugyal is a serene high-altitude meadow surrounded by towering Himalayan peaks. The campsite offers breathtaking sunset and sunrise views, making it one of the most rewarding halts of the trek.

Accommodation here is usually in tents with basic facilities, depending on the trek arrangement.

Day 9: Lyuti Bugyal → Rudranath

Today is one of the most spiritually significant and scenic days of your Panch Kedar journey as you trek toward the sacred Rudranath Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Distance: 10 km

Duration: 5–7 hours

Altitude of Rudranath: 3,600 meters (approx.)

Trail Type: Gradual ascent followed by ridge walking

The trail from Lyuti Bugyal offers mesmerizing high-altitude ridge walks with uninterrupted Himalayan views. The path moves across rolling meadows, rocky patches, and narrow mountain trails.

As you approach Rudranath, the landscape becomes dramatic and mystical, with the temple nestled naturally inside a rock cave.

 

🛕 Arrival at Rudranath Temple

Rudranath Temple is one of the five sacred Panch Kedar shrines, where the face (mukha) of Lord Shiva is worshipped. The temple’s remote setting amid alpine meadows and towering peaks gives it a unique spiritual aura.

Spend time in prayer, explore nearby sacred kund (Surya Kund, Chandra Kund, Tara Kund), and experience the serene Himalayan atmosphere.

Though mostly downhill, the long distance requires steady pacing and careful footing. The sweeping views of Nanda Devi, Trishul, and surrounding Himalayan peaks accompany you until you re-enter the forested sections near Sagar.

Day 11: Sagar → Kalpeshwar → Helang

On this day, you proceed toward the final shrine of the sacred Panch Kedar circuit — Kalpeshwar Temple — before halting at Helang.

Duration: 3–4 hours

Route: Sagar → Gopeshwar → Chamoli → Helang

The drive offers scenic views of deep river valleys, terraced fields, and towering Himalayan ridges. Helang is situated on the Badrinath Highway along the Alaknanda River.

From Helang, a short and pleasant trek through the Urgam Valley leads you to Kalpeshwar Temple. The path passes through small villages, apple orchards, and lush green landscapes.

 

🛕 Kalpeshwar Temple

Kalpeshwar Temple is the fifth and final shrine of the Panch Kedar, where the matted hair (jata) of Lord Shiva is worshipped. Unlike other Kedars, this temple remains open throughout the year.

The temple is located inside a small cave, creating a deeply spiritual and intimate atmosphere for devotees.

After darshan, trek back to Helang and check into your hotel/guesthouse.

Day 12: Helang → Rishikesh

After completing darshan at Kalpeshwar and the sacred Panch Kedar circuit, today you descend from the high Himalayas and drive back to the spiritual town of Rishikesh.

Duration: 9–10 hours

Route: Helang → Joshimath → Chamoli → Karnaprayag → Rudraprayag → Srinagar → Devprayag → Rishikesh

Cancellation

 

If your trek gets called off at the last moment due to a natural calamity/unforeseen circumstances (like rains, snowfall, earthquake, landslides, strike, bandh etc.) we will not refund your money. Instead of money, Walking The Himalayas will issue a trek voucher for the full amount. You can easily redeem that voucher for the same amount for any of the treks available at the same price.

Cancellation charges are based on the total trek fee, irrespective of the amount paid either full or partial.

The cancellation policy of Walking The Himalayas is based on the original booking time and the original start date of the trek.

  • If you cancel a trek before 30 days of trek start date and get a full refund after deduction of 1.99% payment processing fee.

  • If you cancel a trek before 15 days of the trek start date and get a refund after a deduction of 20% of the total trek fee.

  • If you cancel a trek before 10 days of the trek start date and get a refund after a deduction of 40% of the total trek fee.

  • If you cancel a trek before 5 days of the trek start date and get a refund after a deduction of 60% of the total trek fee.

  • The Trek fee is non-refundable if you cancel within 4 days before the trek start date.

Trek cancellation due to weather:

  • In case of an incomplete trek due to weather conditions, you can opt for the same trek again throughout your lifetime on all our fixed departures for the same trek.

  • This attempt only covers the trek fee and will not include any rentals or the transportation amount paid earlier.
