Gulabi Kantha Trek: The Hidden Gem of Yamunotri Valley

Gulabi Kantha is one of the most untouched and visually stunning alpine meadows in the Yamunotri Valley of Uttarakhand. Known for its rosy glow during sunrise and sunset, this high-altitude grassland offers panoramic views of prominent Himalayan peaks like Bandarpoonch, Black Peak, and the Swargarohini range.

The trek passes through dense oak, deodar, and rhododendron forests, gradually opening into vast rolling meadows that remain relatively unknown to mainstream trekkers. The serene atmosphere, vibrant landscapes, and star-filled nights make Gulabi Kantha a perfect choice for those seeking raw Himalayan beauty away from crowded routes.

This trek is ideal for beginners, families, and nature lovers looking to explore a tranquil and less-commercialized destination in Uttarakhand.

🗓️ Gulabi Kantha Trek – 5 Days / 4 Nights Detailed Itinerary

📍 Day 1: Dehradun → Hanuman Chatti / Nishni

Your Gulabi Kantha Trek begins with an early morning pickup from Dehradun by the Walking The Himalayas team. The journey unfolds beautifully as you drive through the misty hills of Mussoorie and follow the winding mountain roads toward Barkot and the Yamunotri Valley. Along the way, the scenery transitions from bustling plains to quiet Himalayan landscapes filled with terraced farms, dense forests, and sparkling streams.

By afternoon, you enter the peaceful Yamunotri region, where the air becomes cooler and the mountains tower dramatically around you. You finally reach Hanuman Chatti or Nishni, a serene Himalayan village that serves as the base for the Gulabi Kantha Trek. After checking into your homestay/guesthouse, take time to relax and breathe in the crisp mountain air. In the evening, enjoy a warm dinner followed by a trek briefing and acclimatization session.

Highlights of the Day:

  • Picturesque drive through Mussoorie, Barkot & Yamunotri Valley

  • Experience the shift from plains to the high Himalayas

  • Stay in a cozy guesthouse/homestay near the Yamunotri River

After breakfast, the trekking adventure truly begins. The trail from Hanuman Chatti climbs gently through dense forests of oak, pine, and rhododendron, offering shade and fresh mountain air. You’ll pass traditional wooden huts, tiny village clearings, and stretches of lush meadows that gradually open up the landscape.

As you ascend, the sound of the valley fades, replaced by the quiet hum of the forest and chirping Himalayan birds. By evening, you arrive at Seema Thatch, a beautiful alpine clearing surrounded by tall ridgelines. Your campsite awaits with warm tea, a glowing sunset, and the peaceful silence of the mountains.

Highlights of the Day:

  • Trek through dense oak and deodar forests

  • Pass by shepherd settlements and natural meadows

  • Overnight stay at a scenic alpine campsite

Altitude: ~9,500 ft (Seema Thatch)
Trek Distance: 6–7 km

📍 Day 3: Seema Thatch → Gulabi Kantha Summit → Return to Camp

This is the most exciting day of the trek. With an early start, the trail gradually reveals the beauty of the upper meadows as you approach the vast expanse of Gulabi Kantha, located at approx. 3,650 meters. As you step onto the ridge, the entire Himalayan skyline opens before you—Bandarpoonch, Kalindi, Shivalik Range and multiple Yamunotri peaks standing tall under the blue sky.

Gulabi Kantha lives up to its name with its pinkish glow during early hours, wildflowers blooming in scattered patches, and endless rolling meadows that stretch toward the horizon. Spend time capturing photographs, exploring the ridge and soaking in the peace of this untouched Himalayan wonder.

After exploring the summit, descend back to Seema Thatch for a warm dinner and another beautiful night under a star-filled sky.
